Limp-Wristed Offense

2 runs in 2 games against the Pirates. How does Zach Duke have such a stranglehold on the Cubs offense? Thank God Maddux is starting tonight so we'll at least look respectable on the field. We're between a rock and a hard place right now with the injuries, so I understand that we need to be patient, but Christ! The good news is that Lee has already been down for 2 weeks, so hopefully he can be back in a month or so. You can't really blame Hendry or anything, you can't even blame Baker (at least not for the injuries). No one is going to be out long enough that we need to make a move for someone like Tony Clark, or God forbid, Carlos Pena. We just need to wait it out, bide our time until June. Hopefully this West Coast swing will be productive.

I agree, this will just require the utmost patience as the team gets through a rough patch. I like the response Carrie Muskat gave to a recent mailbag entry:

With Lee out for two to three months, what are the chances of the Cubs signing someone to play first and then back up Lee when he returns? Could they coax an older player out of retirement such as Mark Grace, Fred McGriff or Tino Martinez? McGriff and Grace are former Cubs, and I'd be happy to see any of the three in a Cub uniform.

Todd Walker was batting .358 and doing just fine. I'd rather have him than McGriff, whose last season was 2004 when he hit .181 for Tampa Bay. I suspect Grace and Martinez are happy in their broadcasting careers.

Since Lee was hurt, there are teams that contacted Cubs general manager Jim Hendry and offered players they want to unload. Hendry didn't want them. Neither do you.
