Spider-Man 3

A record shattering $148 Million dollars opening weekend. Killing the old record held by Johnny Depp and his father-snorting co-star. It made more in three days than Alfonso Soriano will make in the next 8 years, which is a considerable amount in itself. Wow.

Funny that this entry in the series, which is by far the weakest*, should chalk up the biggest numbers. There are enough cool moments to make this one watchable, but the multiple storylines and characters are hastily crammed into one giant pot of Spider-Man stew, and this stew needs some salt.

Comparable in quality to Batman Forever, which was decent, but is probably when the Batman series jumped the shark (only to return triumphantly with Batman Begins). Spider-Man 3 is certainly no Batman and Robin (Batman nipples, Chris O'Donnell and The Governator spewing lines like 'Hell freezes over!' and 'Lets kick some ice!'), but for me, it kicked off the summer blockbuster season with more of a 'eh' than a bang.

*I contest that Spider-Man 2 is one of the best superhero movies ever made, right up there with Batman Begins and the original Superman. One of those rare sequels that was much better than the original.
